Some of you will probably find this interesting
At first glance it seems normal. You have a numbered switch to the left and the fan controls on the right. Seems simple enough. But wait what’s that under the radio? That switch controls the temperature of the air coming out of the vents. Whereas the temperature knob only controls the temperature when the fan turns off on the auto setting (and sometimes on the other settings if it’s hot/cold enough). It may seem redundant at first, but believe me it is amazing being able to fine tune the heater to just that perfect temperature and then never having to change it again.

My E34 has many switches and sliders -
Old in-car computers are super hilarious, too. The box on the right is the OBC and it also has an in-dash display that only works if you have no warning messages (which it almost always does, currently the “Trunklid Open/Closed” sensor is busted and thinks the trunklid is open).

Not one U.S. manufacturer could have ever pulled that off and not be branded as penny pinching.
I have the same Pioneer in Crusty!

I love my OBC!
Also, did your e34 come stock with a 5 disc changer? My previous owner did a really half assed install of a headunit that sounds bad but I haven’t gotten around to figuring out how to fix it yet.

My S600's defrost function is one of the most brutally German things on the car. When you turn it in there is no fan speed setting. Instead, it diverts literally all of the cars heating power to the windshield on full blast. It’s either on or off, no middle ground. As such, the noise level is like being inside of a jet engine when you turn defrost on but it definitely gets the job done...

This is the zen of Jaguar. Overly complex, unreliable, unserviceable, but in fact perfect.

Yep, it’s almost fully loaded (though the pic isn’t mine. Mine is tan interior and doesn’t have the wood trim in the photo). Dual sunroof and winter package (heated seats, mirrors, washer nozzles, and an LSD) are the two big ones. I never actually use the CD changer, I just have one of those tape deck AUX adapters. It’s funny that the CD changer is already a “retro feature”.
Also, since mine is a touring, I have speakers in the roof (another car that isn’t mine - I don’t have the center headrest). Which is kinda neat.

Ford did a decent job of it....
Although I feel every design after this was a step backwards....

My E36 did that too if you hit the defrost button, nothing but full blast. Though it also had another button that directed air upwards, out of the defrost vents and could be adjusted. So once the jet engine defrost button got the frost mostly off I could at least switch to that.

Heh, I’ve actually wondered about how Series XJ heater controls worked for a long time.
My contribution is my Triumph. Not as overcomplicated as the Jag, but still unconventional and somewhat unintuitive.
The cabin vents and defroster are completely independent and have their own temperature controls. The left one is the defroster, the right is for cabin heat. Most useless dual zone climate control ever.
For bonus weirdness, the fan is switched on by pulling the cabin heat knob out. There is no label or indication that this is the case. Also, the “eyeball” vents in the dash, while neat, are always unheated. Because reasons, or something.

Same in my Volvo! I use the button like... twice a year out of fear of the jet engine. :-D

It’s really annoying being a designated driver when very intoxicated people think the windshield is fogging up when it’s actually not.
